Game Runlog
I keep a notebook dedicated to keeping the following “run log” for every game session I run. All run logs go in the same book: I don’t maintain a separate one for each campaign.
Sections to be populated before the game:
- Today’s date
- Session name
- Roll call: a table with each player name, their character/henchmen names/classes/levels, and a checkbox for if present
- Recap of last game
- Session goals
- Pre-game actions/prep
- In-game date/time at start
- Plan for characters of players not present
Sections to be created/populated during the game:
- Recap of character plans, goals, motivations
- Runlog: notes including combats, loot, adlibbed content, time passage as it happens
- Planning phases including adventure and downtime planning will be timed and capped at 10 mins. Plans will be put to a vote, majority wins, dissenters shall sit out of the game while the plan is executed: there will be no separate missions unless part of the agreed plan. Plan admin and execution is untimed after the 10 minutes.
- Loot assignment will work by a creating a loot list in a loot booklet, on an index card, or in Discord chat, and loot assignment concensus must be achieved and PC names marked on the list within 5 mins. (I will double that time if it’s a hoard.) Any loot not accounted for in the list is left behind.
Sections to be created/populated after the game with players present:
- In-game date/time at end of session
- Where the party left off: summary and next planned steps/direction (to help session prep and assist recall next session)
- Loot summary and ownership - this should be decided already by now. Finalise any loose threads.
- Try and set a next game date (even if only tentative)
Sections to be created/populated not necessarily with players present:
- XP and loot final summary (tallying/accounting)
- Actions for next game
